Betonreliëf (1969) is a biomorphic ceramic maquette by renowned Dutch artist Cor Dam, created as a study for a large-scale concrete wall sculpture. The final work was installed in the same year on the facade of a retirement home in Wijk en Aalburg, Netherlands.
This glazed ceramic version captures the essence of Dam’s sculptural language—organic, fluid forms that emerge from a textured surface in rhythmic motion. Executed in a distinctly biomorphic style, the relief draws influence from the organic abstraction of Jean Arp. Avoiding hard edges and literal symbolism, Dam’s forms seem to grow and dissolve, evoking both natural and bodily shapes.
Each tile in the maquette contributes to a carefully balanced composition that interacts dynamically with light and shadow, enhancing the tactile and visual experience. This work exemplifies Dam’s approach to public art in the postwar era: accessible, abstract, and rooted in craftsmanship.
Betonreliëf stands as a powerful example of mid-20th-century Dutch modernism, where sculpture, architecture, and design intersect in everyday public spaces.
