A large and important Rope Rug by acclaimed textile artist Wil Fruytier. This exquisite piece is skillfully woven using a variety of ship ropes, resulting in a visually captivating creation. The playful pattern and diverse shades of brown form a stunning color palette. The sturdy ropes add depth to the rug, making it stand out on the wall like a three-dimensional relief.
Wil Fruytier is widely recognized as a pioneer in the field of textile art. While experimenting with woven Gobelins since 1950, she embarked on a new artistic journey with her groundbreaking ‘rope rugs’. These large-scale rugs, crafted from rugged rope cables, were conceived as ‘spatial creations’ – Fruytier referred to herself as a textile architect. Her focus extended beyond the mere rug itself to encompass the space it occupied, paying meticulous attention to the interplay of light and shadow. Through her ‘soft’ work, she offered a critique of modern architecture, which often relied on ‘hard’ materials such as concrete, steel, glass, and mosaics.
She created textile artworks for banks, hospitals, and universities. Notably, the Evides head office and the Erasmus University branch at the EMC in Rotterdam boast carpets crafted by her. Her tapestries are in various museums, including the Textile Museum in Tilburg, the Central Museum Utrecht, and Museum De Doelen. Additionally, the RCE national collection houses a diverse array of her rugs.
